What is fod map?

The FODMAP diet is a short-term elimination diet that aims to reduce symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) by avoiding foods that are high in certain types of carbohydrates known as FODMAPs. FODMAPs stands for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides, and Polyols. These types of carbohydrates are poorly absorbed by some people, leading to bloating, gas, abdominal pain, diarrhea and/or constipation. In the elimination phase of the FODMAP diet, foods high in FODMAPs are avoided for a period of 2-6 weeks. After this phase, individual foods are reintroduced in a systematic way to identify which FODMAPs are triggers for symptoms. Once identified, these foods can be limited or avoided in the long term while other high-FODMAP foods can be consumed without issue. The FODMAP diet should always be supervised by a healthcare professional and is not recommended as a long-term diet as it may limit important sources of nutrients.
